Chapter 2 - Conversation with Frau Grubach, then Fraulein Burstner
At the beginning of chapter 2, K. is returning home from work, stopping at Frau Grubach's door before entering his room. K. finds her working in her room, where he apologizes for the commotion he must have caused in the morning with his arrest. Frau is surprised he so openly discusses the morning's occurrences, and confesses she had eavesdropped on the commissioners that morning. She reassured K. that, although she did not hear why he was being arrested, that from what she heard it seemed as if the matter was to be taken lightly and with no serious consequences, nothing criminal at least. K. then asks for Fraulein and finds out she is at the theater, and so he waits for her to get home. When she does they end up in Fraulein's room because K. wanted to apologize for the disturbances. They continue with some small talk, and although Fraulein seems uninterested and slightly bothered by K.'s presence, they kiss when K. is returning to his room.

The fact that the story began "in medias res" and that Kafka has so far not given much context or background information leaves a lot of unanswered questions and much room for guessing. The reason for the arrest, which would give a better understanding of the situation as well as revealing K.'s character, has not been given, and i suspect it will not be said throughout the entire book. I actually like this lack of information because it makes the story less predictable and open to assumptions, which may be wrong, making the read more fun.

I found it strange how K. overreacts to Frau saying that Fraulein's conduct is embarrassing because she had seen Fraulein with two different men. K. acts jealous, but when he is waiting for Fraulein he has no desire to speak to her. In my opinion, he acts too jealous for him not to be interested in speaking to her, and when they are together she is not very interested in him.
ReplyDeleteThe lack of information about K.'s arrest is enjoyable because it forces me to contemplate whether he is being tried for something he is innocent of or if he is a crazy man who does not believe that a crime he committed was wrong.

ReplyDeleteThe fact that in the chapter K also mentions that a painter not a banker was supposed to be arrested interests me. It might be possible that the main character K was mistakenly arrested because he, not one of the two bums in the room next door was arrested. Still I have no idea where the novel is actually going because there is so little information about why he is arrested.
