Chapter 5 - The Whip-Man

This chapter can be described as strange. At the bank, K. finds the two warders from his first interrogation at the mercy of the Whipper because K. had complained about their behavior in their first encounter. K. is horrified by this and tries to bribe the Whipper so he would not perform his duty, but fail to prevent the whipping. The next day, he finds the warders again in the same room but shuts the door and leaves.

I think this chapter further shows the extent of the means the government uses to control lives. They are able to have access to a room in the building where K. works to do their punishment there with the probable purpose to torture K. by making him feel guilty.

Chapter 4- Miss Burstner's Friend

In Chapter 4 K writes a letter to Miss Burstner, who he is clearly attracted to. He writes that he wants to meet and talk that Sunday, and asks her to give him a signal. Her signal is loud and clear. That Sunday when he is waiting in his room he notices ruckus in the hall way. Miss Burstner's friend Miss Montag is moving in to her apartment, and tells K that Miss Burstner does not want to speak with him. Seeing that Montag is occupied with the Captain, K knocks on Burstner's door, and when no one answers he basically walks right in. As he leaves the Captain and Montag give him a stern stare. The chapter ends as he closes his own door.

Chapter 3

After K. almost gets in a fight with the student, and is forced to let go of him due to the command of the usher's wife. In K.'s disappointment, the narrator says, "Of course there was no reason to let that worry him, he had suffered defeat only because he had sought to do battle."(Kafka 64) Our pages are all different so you might not find the quote, but I feel like the narrator is telling us that K. will lose his final battle. K. will try and battle with the judges to avoid any punishment, but as a result he will end up defeated. What do you guys think is going to happen to K.?
