Other Works By Kafka
Kafka was known for his works The Trial and Metamorphosis. Having died at a young age in 1924 most of his works were published after his death. Other works and stories include The Castle, America. For instance The Trial was published in 1925, The Castle was published in 1926, and America was published in 1927.He left all of his writings and unpublished work to his friend Max Brod. In Kafka's will he wrote for max to not read any of the work, and to destroy or burn it. Instead Max, who was Franz's friend since a young age, decided to publish the work that was left to him, which was written in German. For this reason Kafka was not famous until after his death. Max Brod even went so far as to publish a biography about his best friend.

ReplyDeleteAlthough Kafka's last wishes were not granted, his literature lives on and has achieved a great amount of fame. Max felt that the work of his friend was too valuable to burn. He obviously did not listen to his friend at all because if he would not have read it he would not know of its value. Every reader of Kafka's work should than Max for disregarding his friends last words.
Max also had to make many editorial decisions with Kafka's work because there were parts of his writing that were crossed out and parts left unfinished. Max normalized spelling, introduced standard High German punctuation, and changed the way Kafka's books were broken up. Although Max changed Kafka's novels, the modern english translations do not have Max's editorial and stylistic interventions.
