Chapter 1 Arrest
In the first chapter we find out that the main character, who is called by the name K (Josef K.) is arrested. There does not seem to be any due process in his arrest though, because he is not told what he is arrested for, and when he asks the police will not tell him. Subconsciously the main character thinks that because it is his 30th birthday that possibly his friends could be playing prank on him. Also, it seems weird that the police let K go to the bank (his place of work) and work with his three colleagues. The main character searches for Mrs. Burstner who then offers to help him with his trial. The specifically odd part of the first chapter is how the police never offer legal services to K, and how he is never told specifically what he is being tried for. Did you guys notice anything odd or interesting?

Yes in fact the main character, K., reminded me of Meursault of "The Stranger" because of his apparent lack of interest in the whole situation. Just as Meursault did not find his own trial to be of any importance, K. seemed to not give much interest to the reason for why he was being arrested and approached the circumstances in an unusually casual manner.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree that he is like Meursault because I think he is not interested because he thinks it might be a practical joke. Even if he does not truly believe that it is a joke, he still feels that he has done nothing wrong. He is casual because he feels he will not face consequences.
ReplyDeleteI get where Diego is coming from but tend to agree with Jonathan. I think that he feels the situation is either a practical joke or just a misunderstanding. In the stranger Meursault is actually at fault and deserves the consequences he gets and even accepts them.
