Chapter 7
Josef finally begins to react to the situation. He cannot concentrate on anything because of the case hovering over him, and he becomes more and more stressed the more he thinks about it. He is told about a painter who supposedly has information about his case, so he goes to see him. The painter turns out to be the Court painter and he goes on to explain to K. the three different types of acquittals that may occur with his case. All the options seem to involve a great deal of uncertainty and indefiniteness, as he explains, the acquittals may take a long time and he may be liable for arrest at any moment for an indefinite amount of time. Again the details of this case are not clear, even the verdict. K. starts feeling overwhelmed again like in the previous chapters, with a sensation of density in the air he cannot handle and leaves.

In this chapter we see K have another pseudo breakdown, when he is in the studio with the painter. K says that he can't breathe because the studio is near an attic, but I think that K has a breakdown because of all the stress he is going through. Yet again Josef must rely on someone else for help instead of attempting anything on his own.
ReplyDeleteEverywhere K. goes, it seems that he meets someone who is connected to the state. Everything is connected so K. cannot find the truth. I also think that the air trouble that K. has is premeditated by the state. The state makes places, like the studio and the offices, uncomfortable for K. so he does not spend too much time in them. I think these places are kept in such conditions because they are the most vulnerable areas of the state and they are preventing K. from searching from the truth in these places for too long.
ReplyDeleteThis whole suffocating air K. experiences does seem to be caused by the government. In this chapter it happens again, and he mentions that the rooms had something to do with the court. Just like in Kafka, the movie, I think it has to do with some kind of way to show how the common people, the outsiders from the government, cannot reside within the state because they are not meant to know the truth, which is why K. is constantly overwhelmed by it all, just as the people who work there do not go outside.
